HUNTERSVILLE – In a virtual town board session virtually all about new additions to town, one name stole the thunder while a loud storm raced through the region.
Whether accidentally or not during the board’s Feb. 15 meeting, potential project developer Jake Palillo left the impression that an anchor tenant in his proposed mixed-use project in the southwest corner of the Hambright Road/U.S. 21 intersection could be the new 23XI NASCAR race team owned by basketball legend Michael Jordan.
The red 23XI logo was prominent on a last-minute drawing Palillo presented to commissioners to illustrate the proposed style and elevation of a 95,000-square-foot race shop that could be part of the 39-acre Palillo Holdings LLC development. Other pieces of the project include a 300-unit apartment complex, a convenience store at the Hambright/U.S. 21 corner and an assortment of flex-office space facilities.
The race team name, with established NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin as a minority owner, is pronounced “twenty three eleven” and competes on the NASCAR circuit fielding a Toyota driven by one of the sport’s most-familiar figures, Bubba Wallace.
