LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Marty Finley) —

E-commerce giant Inc. is expanding its operations in Louisville with a new last mile delivery station facility near the Watterson Expressway.

Amazon officials told the Louisville Metro Planning Commission during an early November meeting that it plans to establish the facility in a 142,000 -square-foot office and warehouse, with heavy truck loading and unloading areas, at 1231 Durrett Lane near Preston Highway. The project also calls for about 700 parking spaces for vans. Louisville Business First reviewed a video recording of the November meeting this week.

Louisville-based real estate firm Poe Cos. is developing the complex and previously asked the city to rezone the site from the C-1 and C-2 commercial districts to the PEC multipurpose district, according to city filings. The property had been home to a vacant 225,000-square-foot former bank processing center that Poe Cos. purchased in September 2019 through an affiliate, Durrett LLC, for $5.5 million.

Shannon Midgley, a representative for Amazon Logistics, told the planning commission during the November meeting that this delivery station will receive items that have been picked, packed and shipped out from one of Amazon’s larger fulfillment centers. She said a lot of the work will be done overnight as items are removed from trucks, put onto movable racks and sorted by zip codes before being loaded onto delivery vans. She also told the planning commission that about 200 Amazon associates, mostly full-time positions, will work at the facility, and it will be served by about 230 third-party drivers.
