AUGUSTA, Ga. (WFXG) – A new recycling and smelting facility is coming to Augusta. German company Aurubis is building a $340M facility at the Augusta Corporate Park.

Augusta’s Economic Development Authority Chairman Steven Kendrick says the new facility will bring more than 120 jobs to the Augusta-area starting at $25/hour. “People can live in our area, they’ll make higher salaries,” he says. “It means they’ll be able to pay for homes, they’ll be able to pay for automobiles, they’ll be able to pay to send their kids to school.”

He says Aurubis selected Augusta out of more than 100 other sites nationwide. “We have become a very, very popular place for companies to come and locate. We have a great workforce, our access to transportation is great, and so what you have is companies who continue to locate in Augusta, Georgia to provide jobs because we’re an ideal place for companies to start new ventures,” Kendrick says. In a statement, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said in part: “We're glad to welcome Aurubis to the number one state for business, marking the single-largest investment made by a German company in the State of Georgia. Our ports system, highly-skilled workforce, and pro-business environment - which prioritizes partnership and innovation - have once again attracted a top-notch opportunity for hardworking Georgians in Augusta.”

The company says the smelter reduces the need for new copper to be mined. “With this investment, we are setting a clear example of sustainable growth, and will become a forerunner for multi-metal recycling in the U.S. as well – a role that we already have in Europe now,” says Roland Harings, CEO of Aurubis AG.
