Hyundai has set an April 15 “Digital World Premiere” for the “segment shattering” new pickup alternative it’s building in Montgomery.

Hyundai is calling the Santa Cruz a “Sport Adventure Vehicle,” something that blurs the line between the SUV and truck categories. According to new “teaser sketches” released this week it has a sleek, carlike front end, four doors, the ground clearance of an SUV ready for mild off-pavement use and a small utility bed in back.

“Santa Cruz, with its bold styling, breaks open all-new segment territory, both for Hyundai and the industry as a whole,” said Jose Munoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America. “Open-bed flexibility coupled with closed-cabin security meets the changing everyday needs of its adventure-oriented buyers, while powerful and efficient engines and superb maneuverability ensure it is a pleasure to drive in urban or off-road environments. Our customers will wonder just how they managed before owning one.”

Hyundai describes it as featuring “powerful and efficient powertrain options, a flexible open bed for gear, cutting-edge connectivity and a highly maneuverable all-wheel drive platform that is equally at home in urban and adventure-focused environments.” It says it will be produced in Montgomery starting this summer.

The automotive press has show considerable interest in the Santa Cruz. Jalopnik.com, among others, noted that depending on its size it could be a competitor to the forthcoming Ford Maverick, a similarly configured trucklet expected to be smaller and more carlike than the company’s Ranger.
